With the average cost of getting your house repainted costing about $2,500; homeowners are looking to go the more DIY route. You don't even need to be that handy! You basically just need some free time before the summer hits in full swing. You need to set aside a weekend for your prep and then over a coarse of a couple of weeks you can wow your neighbors with your amazing new look.
1 Day Project: Wash Your House
You should already be washing your siding once a year, but if you're not, here is the perfect opportunity to start. This will get rid of any mold or mildew and expose any potential problems that you may have. You'll also be getting your house ready for painting.
- A pressure washer is the most popular choice and definitely the easiest to use. Be sure to stand about 10 feet from your house to avoid causing damage.
Now that your house is all clean, it's time to really prepare your exterior for a fresh coat of paint.
On Saturday plan to sand, fill and weatherproof all surfaces. On Sunday, cover any stains with a primer.
Month Long Project
Week 1: Upgrade Your Front Door
Week 2: Paint the siding
Week 3: Apply a second coat
Week 4: Take a look and go over all of the details.
Not only do you have a beautifully painted house, but you now have a sense of accomplishment because you did it yourself!
